Raising awareness to the symptoms of gynecologic cancers is a very important mission and could ultimately save women’s lives. An important facet of the he Laura Crandall Brown Foundation's mission is to raise awareness to the symptoms of these diseases. For this reason, the Foundation is sponsoring a campaign known as “A State of Teal”. Volunteers are working hard to reach out to cities, counties and businesses across the State of Alabama to invite them to participate during the month of September which is National Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month.

“A State of Teal” is designed to raise awareness of GYN cancers, the impact of these cancers on Alabamians, and the need for research and improved screening tests. On September 1, 2016, the City of Gardendale issued a proclamation declaring September as GYN Cancer Awareness Month. Present to accept the proclamation was Doris Moody, resident of Gardendale and State of Teal committee member, and Michelle Cargile, a Gardendale resident and ovarian cancer survivor. The proclamation was presented at the council meeting to Mrs. Cargile and her family. Click the "more pictures" link within this story to view additional photos from the council meeting.

The City will also participate in this event by placing teal lighting at the Library, Civic Center area and adding teal dye to the fountain and teal banners on the lamp posts at the Civic Center. In addition, police patrol cars and all official cars will bear a speciall magnet during the month of September. The Gardendale First Baptist Church will participate by having the sign near I-65 in front of the north campus lit in teal during the month of September. The rocket display in front of Gardendale High School will be lit in teal as well.
