September is National Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. In accordance with the need to raise awareness to these types of cancer, their impact on Alabama, the need for research and improved screening tests, and support for women battling these diseases, a major initiative was established to encourage cities and businesses across the state to participate in "A State of Teal."

The CanSurvive GYN Cancer Support Group, the Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation, and  the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation are excited to announce their collaboration by launching this awareness campaign for gynecologic cancers.  These include ovarian, cervical, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers.  This is the fourth year since this effort was first established and it is making an impact across our state.

In accordance with this campaign, the Honorable Doug Murphree, Mayor of the City of Sylacauga, presented a proclamation declaring September Ovarian/Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Sylacauga at the City Council meeting on Wednesday, September 2. On hand to accept the proclamation was Sylacauga resident and GYN cancer survivor, Sondra Epperson. Ms. Epperson addressed the council and audience after the presentation. "Last year, I attended this council meeting as a citizen of Sylacauga and observer. This year, I stand here as a GYN cancer survivor." Sondra extended her appreciation to the A State of Teal committee members for their assistance in her efforts to raise awareness in her hometown of Sylacauga.

In addition to issuing the proclamation, the city will apply teal lighting to prominent areas around the city including City Hall, the fire station and the library as well as post signs in local businesses. Some city vehicles will bear A State of Teal magnets which will reflect the words "Why Teal?" to encourage people to visit the website to learn the symptoms of these cancers.
